Chocolate for breakfast… and that’s alright

Happy Easter! 🐥💐Let’s get this out of the way: I am not religious. I obviously know the OG story behind the Christian celebration (and apologies if I am not using OG correctly there, kids)… BUT, if the principal festival of the Christian church has been ‘embraced by both Christian and secular communities‘ in more recent times (the context being biblical times), then I am most certainly sec-u-la-ray! Bring on the bunnies, roll out the chicks, pass me the chocolate!

I let my kids eat chocolate for breakfast at Easter because that’s part of the joy, isn’t it? Sometimes I forget what it was like to be a kid, but I clearly remember that not having rules about when I could eat my Easter eggs was one of the things I liked best about Easter Sunday. So, as a parent, there are many things I question myself on, e.g.:

  • “Was it cruel of me to give my kids a Nokia 105 dumbphone to share with the aim of warding off evil tech for just a little longer?” [Yes! You can’t even work the damn phone yourself, Lyn.]
  • “Should I stop my daughter watching YouTube shorts even though she yells at me like the devil incarnate when I try to enforce the rule?” [Yes – woman up, baby!]
  • “Did I make the wrong call dragging my son away from an after party playdate when he was a toddler?” (I had only factored in time for the actual birthday party, and he cried like his little heart was forever broken). [Probably, but come on! That was years ago…and if you’re looking for things to beat yourself up about on the parenting front, you likely have a ton of other examples…] “OK, OK, I understand your point…”

…So, as I was saying, on a parenting front, I question myself a lot. HOWEVER, as God is my witness, I will never ever doubt my approach to Easter chocolate.

OK, and I need to just crowbar this in here at the end: I do like the whole hope, renewal and new beginnings vibe that comes with Easter. That is something I need to cling on to at the moment as things change significantly in my world.

I shall leave you with a song:

P.S. It’s good to be back.
